Education & Mentoring

We believe that underrepresented youth deserve access to an array of mentorship programs, learning experiences, and resources that can strengthen their financial stability, economic mobility, and employment opportunities. Through our Future of Style Fund, we will provide $2M by 2025 to support programs and scholarships to youth in fashion, design, and sustainability, as well as build out mentorship and employment opportunities for students. Current partners, include Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), and more.

In 2022, we established partnerships with City Year, Civics Unplugged, and Partners for Youth with Disabilities.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America

In 2022, Macy’s launched a high-impact, multi-year partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) to serve young people through the power of mentorship. Customer donations online and at checkout raised $4.87M in our first year!

UNCF

We’re empowering the next generation of Black leaders through partnership with UNCF. Our fundraising efforts directly benefit the Macy’s Mission Every One Scholarship Fund, specifically for students attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Together, we’ve raised more than $2M to support 300 students since 2021.

Girls Inc.

We’re proud to have been a Girls Inc. sponsor for over 20 years. Since 2020, we’ve raised nearly $4.4M to help nearly 130,000 girls with access to STEM programs, as well as college and career prep to inspire girls to be strong, smart, and bold.

APIA Scholars

Since 2007, we’ve supported APIA Scholars’ mission by impacting thousands of students through scholarships, emergency funds, and mentorship. In 2022, we expanded our partnership to empower even more Asian American and Pacific Islander students with access to higher education and resources that cultivate their academic, personal, and professional success.

Reading is Fundamental

We’ve raised more than $45M to support Reading is Fundamental (RIF) since 2003, which translates to 15M books for kids who need them, helping to close the literacy gap nationwide. Macy’s was a founding member of RIF’s Racial Equity and Inclusion work to ensure kids have access to books that feature characters and stories that reflect the diversity of our communities.

Hispanic Federation

Our partnership with Hispanic Federation is now in its 20th year. In 2022 alone, we provided $1.29M to CREAR Futuros, an educational program which creates opportunities for Latino students to receive a college degree. Our involvement also supports Digital Equity Centers throughout the U.S., where underserved Latino families receive digital skills training, and access to laptops through lending libraries, which supports necessities like telemedicine, remote learning, and job search needs.

Future of Style Fund

We believe in inspiring the next generation of designers and creators, which is why we're providing $2 million by 2025 to support programs and scholarships to underrepresented youth in fashion, design and sustainability. Plus, we're offering mentorship and employment opportunities through our business and partners, like Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), City College San Francisco (CCSF), and Clark Atlanta University.

FIT: Future of Fashion

Our partnership with FIT provides funds to support the Future of Fashion, an educational program for top design students and industry leaders to showcase their masterpieces in a diverse spectrum of socioeconomic, racial, physical, and creative backgrounds. As the next generation of creative industry leaders, FIT students embrace inclusivity, gender fluid collections, cultural representation, and the future of fashion through sustainable design concepts.

Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing

We’re committed to helping young people navigate the challenges of today and tomorrow. We believe that focusing on outcomes that de-stigmatize mental health, and increase access to resources and services builds a strong foundation for success. In 2022, we established partnerships with National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), The Jed Foundation, Active Minds, Bring Change 2 Mind, The Steve Fund, The Mental Health Coalition, On Our Sleeves, and National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network.

The Trevor Project

We’re proud to have been working with The Trevor Project for more than a decade. As The Trevor Project’s largest funder and national Pride partner, we’ve raised over $5M in support of their mission since our partnership began in 2019. In this past year alone, our partnership has allowed Trevor to spend over 35,000 minutes with LGBTQ young people on its 24/7 phone lifeline, text and chat.

NAMI & The Jed Foundation

To raise funds to combat the youth mental health crisis in the U.S., Macy’s partnered the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and The Jed Foundation, to launch a customer round up campaign that raised $1.9M to help ensure young people have the resources needs and create systemic change in youth mental health care through educational and support programs at schools and campuses in underserved communities.

Environmental Stewardship

We believe that advocating for a healthier planet starts by empowering our youth. That’s why we’re supporting groups that engage young people in environmental stewardship programs and increase access to nature and the outdoors for underrepresented youth. Since 2021, we have established partnerships through grant funding with the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots & Shoots, and Student Conservation Association, as well as a customer-facing campaign with Trust for Public Land.

Trust for Public Land

Together with our customers, we’ve helped communities across the country to become more resilient to climate change and empowered youth through a new partnership with Trust for Public Land (TPL). Funds we raised directly support TPL’s Community Schoolyards™ project, which helps transform barren public parks into green spaces to create healthy, livable communities for all. Last year alone, our customers donated nearly $1.5M to support more than 1,400 students across the country.

Colleague Giving & Volunteering

Our colleagues love to volunteer and give back throughout the year. In 2022, our colleagues volunteered 54,000+ hours and donated $3.3M to 6,000+ charities across the country. This comes to life through two annual campaigns - Bag Hunger and The Big Give Back.

Bag Hunger

Since 1998, our Macy’s, Inc. colleagues have helped to provide hundreds of millions of meals and year-round support to local food banks through our program, Bag Hunger. In 2022, we began our partnership with No Kid Hungry to address systemic issues contributing to childhood hunger and supporting the company’s commitment to food equity through CEO Action for Racial Equality. We’re proud to have raised $862,000, with an additional $180,000 in Matching Gifts, and 6,371 volunteer hours.

The Big Give Back

Launched in 2018, The Big Give Back is our annual colleague fundraising and volunteer campaign that has raised over $17M for local charities across the country. We’ve benefitted over 10,000 unique charity recipients, and in 2022 our colleagues raised over $2M, and volunteered 7,484 hours.
