Macy's and Intel Demonstrate how Technology can add Highlights to the Cosmetics Shopping Experience

NEW YORK, New York, January 15, 2012 – Macy's and Intel have collaborated to develop a new dimension to the in-store shopping experience for cosmetics. The result – Macy's Beauty Spot – is being showcased in the Intel exhibit at the National Retail Federation's Annual Convention & Expo this week in New York City.

Macy's Beauty Spot is a new cosmetics concept that allows customers to search and select products from various product categories across multiple brands from a custom-designed kiosk located prominently on the selling floor. Customers interested in lipstick or foundation, for example, can explore a wide range of alternatives, supported by detailed product information, new ideas and testers.

Beginning in fall 2011, Macy's Beauty Spot with interactive touch screens were installed in four Macy's stores in New Jersey, Texas and Virginia for testing and experimentation. Customer response is being closely monitored so key findings can be analyzed and applied to future generations of the kiosk concept. In these four locations, a dedicated Macy's Beauty Spot concierge associate is available to assist customers and process credit card transactions using a hand-held mobile device.

"Macy's Beauty Spot is an outstanding example of how our company is using technology that a customer recognizes and enjoys to enhance the shopping experience inside our stores," said Mike Tobin, Macy's senior vice president for omnichannel strategy. "In particular, Macy's Beauty Spot is designed to appeal to a cosmetics customer who prefers to shop on her own, and who wants to understand the full range of options available to her. In essence, Macy's Beauty Spot provides another option for how our customer interacts with products we sell and the expert advice on beauty and makeup that Macy's offers at every branded cosmetics counter."

Macy's Beauty Spot is powered by the 2nd generation Intel® CoreTM i7 processor. The Intel processors enable touch screen technology enhanced with vivid, high-definition graphics that attract the customer's attention and allows her to interact with the merchandise assortment in a meaningful way so she can make informed choices.

"Retailers are continuously searching for new ways to deliver personalized brand interactions that effectively reach their customers," said Michelle Tinsley, general manager of Intel's Personal Solutions Division. "Macy's Beauty Spot offers customers the best of both online and in-store shopping by using Intel technology to deliver an engaging and memorable experience to maximize a shopper's time in the store."
