On October 28th Macy's celebrates its 150th birthday, marking its long-standing reputation as both a fashion brand at the forefront of the retail industry and as an icon that has played a leading role in American pop culture.
From the small screen to the big screen, Macy's has made cameo appearances in more than 50 movies and television shows, 16 songs and a number of radio and theatrical stage productions, not to mention 60 years of broadcasts of its famous Thanksgiving Day Parade, a reality show ("Unwrapping Macy's") devoted to the day-to-day life of Macy's Herald Square (the "World's Largest Store"), and has lived up to being the "Miracle on 34th Street," the holiday classic based on the one-and-only Santa.
Here is a snapshot of Macy's starring role in movies, music and celebrity circles.
Macy's in Movies
Making its cinematic debut in 1906 in "The Kleptomaniac," Macy's has played a role in a number of Hollywood hits, including "Auntie Mame" (1958), "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (1967), "Sweet Charity" (1969), and more recently "Ocean's Eleven" (2001), "Shark Tale" (2004) and "King Kong" (2005). Not to be missed is Macy's most famous and beloved role in the holiday classic, "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947).
Macy's on Television
With unprecedented holiday traditions and events such as Macy's 4th of July Fireworksâ and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, it is inevitable that Macy's would be included in many hit television shows - 1980's favorites "The Wonder Years" and "Who's the Boss"; "Seinfeld" and "Friends" in the 90s; and popular picks from recent years like "Desperate Housewives," "Ugly Betty," "The Biggest Loser" and "Project Runway."
Macy's in Music
As a true Manhattan landmark that has withstood the test of time, Macy's has made its way into many a ballad. From Frank Sinatra's "Tangerine" and Bob Dylan's "Last Thoughts on Woodie Guthrie," to Jay-Z and R. Kelly's "Shake Ya Body," Macy's has made an indelible mark on the music industry. In addition to lyrical mentions, Macy's stores have been featured in some popular music videos including "Heard 'Em Say" by Kanye West and Adam Levine, who filmed their video in the Macy's Herald Square store in 2006.
Macy's Celebrity Beginnings
And while Macy's has gained fame for its appearances in some of the entertainment industry's most memorable productions, many of Hollywood's heavyweights can thank Macy's for helping them get started as well. Celebrities such as Dustin Hoffman, Rachael Ray, Sean (Diddy) Combs, Rhea Perlman, Carol Channing, Diahann Carroll, Burgess Meredith, and F. Murray Abraham all donned a Macy's badge before they rose to fame.
