Through our signature "give back" opportunities held
throughout the year in our stores, our customers
contributed $28.3 million in 2008 to benefit charities in the
communities we serve.
Macy's and Go Red For Women
2008 marked Macy's fifth year as national sponsor of Go
Red For Women, the American Heart Association (AHA)
campaign for awareness and prevention of heart disease
in women. A total of $3.5 million was contributed to the
AHA from Macy's support during the year. All Macy's stores
participated in National
Wear Red Day, and Go
Red was among the
beneficiaries of our
national Shop for a
Cause charity shopping
day and our Thanks
for Sharing holiday
program. In the past
five years, Go Red has
received more then $19 million from Macy's and its
customers.
In 2008, Macy's established the Macy's Go Red For
Women Multicultural Fund, an innovative program to raise
awareness of cardiovascular disease in high-risk female
populations. The fund will initially reach out to Hispanic
women who generally have lower awareness of heart
disease. Programs to
reach other high-risk
populations are being
developed.
Shop for a Cause
Macy's raised more than $9.1 million in one day through our
third annual Shop for a Cause national charity shopping
day. The event was held in every Macy's store nationwide
and was designed to raise awareness and
support for local and regional nonprofit
organizations across the United States.
Truly a grassroots effort, Macy's donated
tickets to the one-day shopping event
to charities in our local communities and,
in turn, the charity sold the tickets and
retained the proceeds. Shop for a Cause
has raised nearly $28 million in three years.
