EPA Praises Macy's

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognizes Macy's as one of its top 20 partners for generating the most green electricity on site.

Green power, which comes from renewable resources such as wind, solar, biomass and geothermal, is deployed directly at energy users' facilities rather than at central power plants. Green power electricity generates less pollution than conventional power and produces no net increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

According to the EPA, Macy's stores in Hawaii and California are generating more than 10 million kilowatt-hours of solar power annually, which is equivalent to 3% of the electricity use of all it stores located in California and Hawaii. In addition, it is the equivalent of avoiding carbon dioxide emissions of more than 1,000 passenger vehicles per year or the amount of electricity needed to power more than 1,000 average American homes annually.

Macy's ranks in the Top 20 EPA on-site green power users list and in the Top 20 EPA retail list of green power purchasers. The Top 20 partners are generating and consuming more than 736 million kilowatt hours of on-site green power annually. That's equivalent to the electricity needed to power more than 61,000 American homes a year!
